What is PDR?

PDR (also known as Hail Damage Repair, Paintless Dent Removal or Paintless dent repair) is a technique for removing minor dents and dings - such as those caused by hail damage - from the body of an automobile. A wide range of damage can be repaired using PDR; however, if there is paint damage, PDR may not be suitable. The most common uses for PDR are hail damage repair, door ding repair, minor body creases or minor bumper indentations. The main factors limiting the use of PDR are damage to the auto body paint or extremely sharp dents and creases.

How does PDR Work?

The most common methods of paintless dent removal utilize metal rods and body picks to push the dents out of the inner side of the body panel. Alternatively, PDR glue can be used from the outer side of the panel to pull the dents out. In most instances, fine-tuning the repair also involves "tapping down" the dents to remove tiny high spots, making the surface perfectly flush. Necessary tools for PDR include florescent lighting or a light-reflection board, which both allow the technician to see the shadows created by a dent. Without a paintless dent repair light or reflector board, the fin detials can't be seen and the technician cannot position their tools properly to remove the damage. To put it simply, paintless dent removal requires a specially trained technician to specifically push exact points to a precise height. This can only be properly done with specialized training and the use of a PDR reading instument, such as a PDR reflector board or other special paintless dent removal lighting described above.
